This short work is intended as a guide to the practical
application of anatomy, in order that the knowledge
gained by the student will be related to the clinical
situations that she meets every day. The book presupposes,
as is usual in our midwifery schools, that
those who read it will be gaining practical experience
in clinics and on wards before they have covered the
theoretical syllabus laid down by the Central Midwives
Board; it is therefore to be used as a handbook to
supplement clinical experience.
Wherever possible, the simple tabulated method
used for the description of each organ is the same.
This basic list of headings has been found very helpful
by students in assisting them with their recollection
of facts when there is written work to do in the classroom
or at examinations. Simple blackboard diagrams
have, in the main, replaced the more detailed illustrations
usually found in anatomy textbooks; these are diagrams
that even the least artistic of students should be able to
reproduce and understand.
