ASSESSMENT OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF NURSES ON PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF PRESSURE ULCER AMONG PATIENT’S AT WA MUNICIPAL HOSPITAL
Pressure ulcers, are a significant healthcare concern, particularly for patients with limited mobility. This study assesses the knowledge of nurses at Wa Municipal Hospital in Ghana regarding the prevention and management of pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers pose a considerable clinical challenge, and this research focuses on nurses' competencies in addressing this issue. The Methodology outlined the research design for a study focusing on the knowledge of nurses regarding pressure ulcer management and prevention at Wa Municipal Hospital, located in the Upper West Region of Ghana. The study population consists of registered and practicing nurses at the hospital, with a sample size of 101 nurses chosen using a convenience sampling method. The result of the study revealed valuable insights into the knowledge, practices, and protocols related to pressure ulcer prevention and management. As indicated in the survey results, it is encouraging to observe that nurses at Wa Municipal Hospital generally possess a commendable level of knowledge regarding pressure ulcer prevention and management. The fact that over 96% of the respondents either agreed or strongly agreed that pressure ulcers occur due to prolonged pressure on the skin and underlying tissues underscores their awareness of the primary cause. With the recognition of turning and repositioning as an essential preventive measure, approximately 94% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that regular patient repositioning is effective in prevent ing pressure ulcer. In conclusion, this study focused on evaluating the knowledge and practices of nurses at Wa Municipal Hospital in Ghana concerning pressure ulcer prevention. The findings offer opportunities for enhancing patient care, improving healthcare quality, and reducing the associated costs. This research, based on a sample of 101 practicing nurses, has provided valuable information to guide improvements in pressure ulcer care at the hospital.
